    Spot the "Horseshoe"

I should note that when I intercepted the Keota, IA EF4 in March 2023, I couldn't really see the "horseshoe" and it's not readily apparent in my imagery because of how massive the entire structure was. However it was present and can be clearly identified in, for example, Devin Pitts' video...

    Spot the "Horseshoe"

As far as I know, this term was coined by Skip Talbot, a chaser I've long held in high regard, to describe the appearance of a supercell updraft base when it gets occluded by the RFD clear slot punching through it. However, I've since noticed that NOAA also uses it in their field guide. I...

    Severe Weather Potential 11/04/24

A strong but apparently brief tornado occurred in southern Missouri a bit ago. Also likely was quite heavily rain-wrapped based on the reflectivity presentation, and after dark as well. Would have been very difficult and dangerous to spot, this is why correlation coefficient is a valuable tool...

How many tornadoes have you spotted?

I've seen a few tornadoes while chasing (and blown great opportunities to see several more), but never felt the need to call them in since they were all already warned with a "tornado...observed" tag. I did call in on a storm that produced a tornado around 10-15 minutes later. The storm already...

How long have you been a storm spotter?

Went to my first training session in 2004, so 20 years now.

How often do you get a training refresher?

I try to get one every other year or so. In-person.

    Scariest storm chasing experiences!

Nothing too dramatic but have had a few white-knuckle moments trying not to get munched by the rear-flank core/"Bear's cage" of fast-moving HP supercells on dicey gravel back roads, most recently in southwest Iowa on April 26 of this year. I did eventually get out of it and got on a better storm...

    Close calls with severe weather?

Aside from those which occurred more-or-less intentionally (while chasing); the F3 Stoughton, WI tornado of August 18, 2005 missed my family's house by less than 1/2 mile. I was at home at the time, between my freshman and sophomore years of college.

    Is storm chasing reckless?

I don't consider the act itself reckless, otherwise I wouldn't do it. Now, do some people exhibit reckless behavior while chasing? Absolutely!

    Any storm chasers?

Yes, generally locally/regionally, don't get out to the Plains as often as I'd like.
